Internships for Credit

If you are hoping to intern in Barcelona for academic credit, you’ve come to the right place! Barcelona SAE has three different options to get you the professional experience, personal growth, and academic objectives you hope to accomplish though your internship in Barcelona.

  • Option #1: Credit from Barcelona SAE – Plymouth State University
  • Option #2: Credit from Your Home School
  • Option #3: No Academic Credit, Just Great Experience

Option #1: Credit from Barcelona SAE – Plymouth State University

Through our partnership with Plymouth State University (PSU), you can earn between 3-12 credits in the fields listed below.

To receive credit from Barcelona SAE through PSU, interns must have completed a minimum of 60 hours of credit from your home institution before going on the program, be majoring or minoring in a field offered by PSU, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.  For more information, please consult the Barcelona SAE and PSU Learning Agreement.

There is a $800.00 fee for interns who wish to receive academic credit through PSU for their Barcelona internship. There is no price difference between 3, 6, 9, or 12 credits.

How is credit given?

Credit will be assessed and given based on the successful completion of a variety of assignments. The required assignments include essays, journals, and evaluations and will be assessed based on the Grading Rubric.

  • Minimum three page pre-departure paper based on the intern’s goals for the program.
  • Directed, reflective internship journal completed by the intern during the program (four entries).
  • Mid-Term Online Evaluation completed by intern.
  • Evaluation completed by internship supervisor.
  • 8-10 page reflective culminating essay on overall learning experience.

Credit is given in letter grade format (A, B, C, D, and F) in a specific academic discipline. The amount of credit is awarded based on the number of hours interned:

  • 120 hours = 3 credits
  • 240 hours = 6 credits
  • 360 hours = 9 credits
  • 480 hours = 12 credits

Interns will receive their transcript approximately 6-10 weeks after the program ends, stating the grade and the number of credits earned. The number of hours that can be completed depends on the internship field.

Plymouth State University, Barcelona SAE’s accrediting partner, is a NEASC accredited institution with over 20 years experience awarding internship credit both domestically and internationally. PSU has been nationally recognized for its commitment to the environment and for innovative programs that are making an impact both regionally and globally.

Intern Abroad for Credit Faculty Evaluator – Kevin Taylor Anderson, PhD

Kevin has a PhD in Cultural Anthropology and is a Lecturer in Media, Culture, and Visual Methods at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Kevin was fortunate to begin traveling at an early age with his family, climbing the pyramids of Teotihuacan in Mexico, surfing in Hawaii, and snorkeling in the Caribbean. This travel bug set him on his career as an anthropologist and ethnographic filmmaker where his work has taken him to Ireland, Italy, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Japan, and Australia. Kevin also founded the Western Massachusetts hiking club, Trail Wobblers, and he reviews films on the Web for Film Autopsy. In addition to hiking and travel, Kevin loves scuba diving, all things aquatic, and is a sushi enthusiast.

Option #2: Credit from Your Home Institution

Many students are able to arrange for credit through their home institution. We suggest that you weigh this option financially and credit-wise against whats available through Barcelona SAE & Plymouth State University. Contact your study abroad office, academic advisor, or your career services staff to see if this option is available at your school.

Option #3: No Academic Credit, Just Great Experience

Not interested in earning academic credit? No problem! Many of our interns come to Barcelona simply for the professional experience, since our internships don’t offer credit by default.

Process & Requirements

We’ve tried to make the Barcelona SAE internship application process as simple as possible to ensure a quality experience for you. Just follow the simple steps below to get started on creating the Barcelona experience of a lifetime!

  • Step One: Complete a Barcelona SAE application to begin the process.
  • Step Two: Pay your $200.00 application deposit. Please note that this is NOT an extra fee, but rather, goes towards the overall cost of your program.
  • Step Three: Once you’ve paid your Application Deposit, your Barcelona SAE Advisor will be in touch regarding the next steps. You’ll be asked to submit a cover letter, resume, and other documents to fully complete the initial application stage.
  • Step Four: Once all of your materials have been received, we will setup a Skype Interview so that we can learn more about your skills, interests, and ideal internship to determine which placement will be the best match.
  • Step Five: Wait for your acceptance decision!
  • Step Six: Submit your $500.00 confirmation deposit. Again, this is NOT an extra fee, but rather, goes towards the overall cost of your program.
  • Step Seven: As your internship start date approaches, you will receive confirmation of your placement, pre-departure materials, and participate in our pre-departure webinar.
  • Step Eight: You’ll be off to Barcelona and the experience of a lifetime will begin. You’ll be greeted at the airport by a local Barcelona SAE staff member, taken to your housing, and welcomed by our team with a orientation on your arrival day.
GPA Requirement

The minimum GPA required to participate in the internship is 2.5. If your GPA is lower than the requirement, don’t worry! Just contact your Barcelona SAE Advisor to let us know about your situation. We’ll do that all that we can to find the program that’s right for you.

Language Proficiency

The internship program is open to all levels of Spanish speakers. However, intermediate to advanced speakers will often have more placement options than beginners. Depending on the length of your internship, you’ll also participate in a either one or two week Spanish Language course to refresh your skills!

  • 6 week interns will receive ONE WEEK of Spanish Language Courses.

Housing in Barcelona

Homestays - Our Most Popular Option!

Homestay Photo

A homestay can be one part of meaningful cultural integration and increased safety of the study abroad experience. Homestays are designed to be a mutually valuable experience for both the hosts and the participant. We work to find homestays that want to share their culture and language with the students and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

A homestay family does not always mean a husband and wife, two children and a cute dog. In fact, what is more common is to live in the apartment of an older, widowed woman who enjoys the company.

The thorough screening process, regular family check-ins and homestay reviews allow us to monitor safety and the quality of the homestays we place our students with.

And as an added bonus, homestays include breakfast and dinner every day, laundry services once a week, a set of keys to the apartment to come and go as you please, and an individual or shared bedroom.

Apartment Photo

Living in an apartment in Barcelona provides students with a very realistic experience of life in the city. Apartments are fully equipped shared living spaces that Barcelona SAE students may live in jointly with other students – whether they’re American or International. Our apartments are spread throughout the city in safe areas, all with easy access to public transportation, restaurants and shops.

Students who choose to live in an apartment do not get meals included, but every apartment has a full kitchen facility which allows students to do their own cooking (and grocery shopping… which can be a very entertaining activity in Barcelona!)
