Itinerary

When you arrive in Barcelona, you will be met at the airport by a Barcelona SAE staff member who will escort you to your living arrangements.  During the ride to your new home, we start your orientation to Barcelona and to the internship program so no time is wasted in helping you to feel comfortable.

During the first few days, you will meet your internship supervisor to get an overview of what projects you will work on, receive an introduction to the organization and familiarize yourself with the surroundings.

Depending on the internship placement and the duration, you may only focus on Spanish during the first week, or you may jump right into the internship placement. Once you begin your intensive Spanish language classes, you'll get to meet other international students, and start improving your language skills.

Throughout your internship, you’ll enjoy the following:

Intensive Spanish Classes

To give a jump-start to your Spanish speaking abilities, an internship program of 8 weeks or longer includes two full weeks of intensive Spanish language classes. An internship program of 6-8 weeks includes one full week of intensive Spanish language classes.

Cultural Activities

Interns participate in several cultural activities aimed at providing an overall view of the culture outside of the work place. These activities take advantage of Barcelona as a living classroom and encourage integration.

Excursions

Depending on the duration of the internship placement, there may be optional excursions you can choose to join to exciting locations outside of Barcelona.

Work Schedule

Students spend approximately 20 hours per week in their internship placement, usually from Monday – Thursday, leaving Friday as a day for cultural integration, internship workshops with Barcelona SAE staff, or free travel days.

Outside the Internship

Depending on the length of the internship and the time of year, interns could be offered subsidized excursions to exciting places outside of Barcelona.  Some of the excursions are day trips and some are overnight, weekend excursions to further away destinations.

Please check out our excursions for more information on the possibilities.

Interns also have their weekends free for personal travel and the Barcelona SAE staff is very happy to help give independent travel advice including where to go, how to save on costs, low-cost travel options, local festivals and more.

Katy Raymond

What was something you were surprised to learn about Barcelona or Spain? Or what aspect of the country or city were you least expecting?

Coming here, I didn't realize how passionately the people of Catalonia want independence, and how it's permeated so many aspects of their lives, especially recreational culture. I saw this fact everywhere. One time, at the school, one child used red and yellow together in a mundane activity, and accidentally caused an uproar in the class, which only calmed when the student changed the yellow to blue.
