Intern Abroad for Credit

If you are hoping to intern in Barcelona for academic credit, you've come to the right place! Barcelona SAE has three different options to get you the professional experience, personal growth, and academic objectives you hope to accomplish though your internship in Barcelona.

  • Option #1: Credit from Barcelona SAE - Plymouth State University
  • Option #2: Credit from Your Home School
  • Option #3: No Academic Credit, Just Great Experience
Option #1: Credit from Barcelona SAE - Plymouth State University

Through our partnership with Plymouth State University (PSU), you can earn between 3-12 credits in the fields listed below.

To receive credit from Barcelona SAE through PSU, interns must have completed a minimum of 60 hours of credit from your home institution before going on the program, be majoring or minoring in a field offered by PSU, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.  For more information, please consult the Barcelona SAE and PSU Learning Agreement.

Cost:

There is a $800.00 fee for interns who wish to receive academic credit through PSU for their Barcelona internship. There is no price difference between 3, 6, 9, or 12 credits.

How is credit given?

Credit will be assessed and given based on the successful completion of a variety of assignments. The required assignments include essays, journals, and evaluations and will be assessed based on the grading rubric.

  • Minimum three page pre-departure paper based on the intern's goals for the program.
  • Directed, reflective internship journal completed by the intern during the program (four entries).
  • Mid-Term Online Evaluation completed by intern.
  • Evaluation completed by internship supervisor.
  • 8-10 page reflective culminating essay on overall learning experience.
Credit is given in letter grade format (A, B, C, D, and F) in a specific academic discipline. The amount of credit is awarded based on the number of hours interned:

  • 120 hours = 3 credits
  • 240 hours = 6 credits
  • 360 hours = 9 credits
  • 480 hours = 12 credits
Interns will receive their transcript approximately 6-10 weeks after the program ends, stating the grade and the number of credits earned. The number of hours that can be completed depends on the field of internship.

Plymouth State University, Barcelona SAE's accrediting partner, is a NEASC accredited institution with over 20 years experience awarding internship credit both domestically and internationally. PSU has been nationally recognized for its commitment to the environment and for innovative programs that are making an impact both regionally and globally.

Option #2: Credit from Your Home Institution

Many students are able to arrange for credit through their home institution. We suggest that you weigh this option financially and credit-wise against whats available through Barcelona SAE - Plymouth State University. Contact your study abroad office, academic advisor, or your career services staff to see if this option is available at your school.

Option #3: No Academic Credit, Just Great Experience

Not interested in earning academic credit? No problem! Many of our interns come to Barcelona simply for the professional experience, since our internships don't offer credit by default.

Itinerary

When you arrive in Barcelona, you will be met at the airport by a Barcelona SAE staff member who will escort you to your living arrangements.  During the ride to your new home, we start your orientation to Barcelona and to the internship program so no time is wasted in helping you to feel comfortable.

During the first few days, you will meet your internship supervisor to get an overview of what projects you will work on, receive an introduction to the organization and familiarize yourself with the surroundings.

Depending on the internship placement and the duration, you may only focus on Spanish during the first week, or you may jump right into the internship placement. Once you begin your intensive Spanish language classes, you'll get to meet other international students, and start improving your language skills.

Students spend approximately 20 hours per week at their internship placement.  Although, the schedule for each intern will vary slightly due to the demands of their company.

Throughout your internship, you’ll enjoy the following:

  • Intensive Spanish Classes - To give a jump-start to your Spanish speaking abilities, an internship program of 8 weeks or longer includes two full weeks of intensive Spanish language classes. An internship program of 6-8 weeks includes one full week of intensive Spanish language classes.
  • Cultural Activities - Interns participate in several cultural activities aimed at providing an overall view of the culture outside of the work place. These activities take advantage of Barcelona as a living classroom and encourage integration.
  • Excursions - Depending on the duration of the internship placement, there may be optional excursions you can choose to join to exciting locations outside of Barcelona.
  • Work Schedule - Students spend approximately 20 hours per week in their internship placement, usually from Monday – Thursday, leaving Friday as a day for cultural integration, internship workshops with Barcelona SAE staff, or free travel days.

Outside the Internship

Depending on the length of the internship and the time of year, interns could be offered subsidized excursions to exciting places outside of Barcelona.  Some of the excursions are day trips and some are overnight, weekend excursions to further away destinations.

Interns also have their weekends free for personal travel and the Barcelona SAE staff is very happy to help give independent travel advice including where to go, how to save on costs, low-cost travel options, local festivals and more.

Katy Raymond

If you had one perfect day in Barcelona where would you go, and what would you do?

I had my perfect day actually, but I didn't totally get to plan it, and that's what made it perfect. I went to find breakfast in a back alley of a neighborhood I hadn't explored yet, happened upon a cultural activity, and followed it until I got lost, explored a neighborhood, and ended up at Ciutadella Park again. Then some hot chocolate and churros, and a walk to the arc de triomf. They only thing that could have made that day better would have been another visit to Sagrada Familia I think.
