While abroad, students are representing their home country, Barcelona SAE and their home university as well. For this reason, we expect all students to behave in a manner that is respectful of other people, local laws, customs, and property. Students are responsible for researching and understanding issues that relate to local laws, as well as the safety, health, political, and cultural conditions of the host country. While enrolled in a Barcelona SAE program it is expected that participants will abide by this code of conduct. Violation of this code will be met with appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from the program.

While in a foreign country, a U.S. citizen is subject to that country’s laws and regulations. That country may not afford the protections available under U.S. law. Any student convicted of a crime abroad can expect incarceration and/or fines. Barcelona SAE will not assist in legal matters caused by a participant’s use of alcohol or drugs. Violation of any of the following may result in disciplinary action from Barcelona SAE:

• Violation of the Alcohol and Drug Use Policy (See below)
• Criminal behavior or violation of local laws, including theft or vandalism
• Violation of rules in effect in the student’s housing
• Excessive intoxication
• Abusive language or behavior toward Barcelona SAE staff, university faculty/staff, host family, or other program participants
• Sexual harassment
• Disorderly, indecent, or obscene conduct
• Violent behavior
• Damage to Barcelona SAE facilities, housing, university, hotels, or transportation vehicles
• Plagiarism and cheating
• Falsification of documents or personal records submitted to Barcelona SAE as part of the application or acceptance process.
• Any inappropriate conduct including but not limited to violation of any Barcelona SAE policies.

At Barcelona SAE, we do not serve alcohol to participants and we avoid drinking alcohol with participants present. This means that at our group meals and lunches there is no alcohol served. We do, however, make an exception and allow students a small amount of alcohol at events such as a winery tour, where we feel that a small sampling is appropriate in the cultural context.

Some customized programs, especially those whose studies relate to food and culture, choose to override this policy in one of two ways. Some allow students to drink alcohol at group meals but only if the student purchases their own, and others allow alcohol at group events when this is covered by the program fee. In both of these cases the sending school assumes responsibility by sending an email to Barcelona SAE including the text:

The University of XXX agrees to overwrite the Barcelona SAE alcohol policy and will be allowing program participants to consume alcohol at group events and functions. Students will be responsible for paying for their own drinks and will be billed apart from the group. The faculty and sending school assume any responsibility for behavior or accidents resulting from alcohol consumption at these events.

Both students and faculty will be expected to be punctual for events, tours, busses and classes. If a student holds up the group due to tardiness, we ask that the faculty member speak to the student to ensure that in the future they will respect the group's schedule. In some cases it will be up to the Barcelona SAE staff and the faculty member to decide when to leave a student behind should they be causing a delay that will result in missing an activity or event.

Barcelona SAE will expect any attending faculty to be active in the enforcement of Barcelona SAE's Code of Conduct. Students onsite are representatives of the United States, their home university, of Barcelona SAE, and of you!

Barcelona SAE Staff will be present on program activities and excursions to help with managing the group, but it is the responsibility of the faculty member(s) to ensure that students are actively participating in their education, and not hindering the learning of others. This includes during and after program hours.
