About the Program

What is Start Abroad?

Education abroad is a research-proven, high impact practice that nurtures academic success, cultural fluency, finding community, and personal growth. By starting abroad, University of Miami students will have the opportunity to enhance critical study, communication, intercultural, and transferable skills that will serve them throughout their college years and beyond.

Students will start their University of Miami journey in beautiful Barcelona in the fall, where they will take 12 U.S. credit hours of coursework alongside their UM peers, taught by local and international faculty at our U.S. accredited study center, the Barcelona SAE Academic Center at the Barcelona School for International Studies (SIS). Living with a local host family or in a residence hall, students will be immersed in Spanish language and culture while taking part in both structured learning and independent discovery.

Activities & Excursions

Our Barcelona SAE Conecta program offers a variety of immersive cultural activities throughout the fall. These activities are shared with students from other Barcelona SAE programs, allowing Start Abroad students the opportunity to connect with upperclassmen. These hands-on activities are organized with the intention of giving students the tools to integrate as much as possible during the semester.

Example Cultural Activities include:

After a quick crash course on survival phrases to shop in Spanish, we will be divided into groups and provided a shopping list to gather local products.
  • Guided Tour: Join us for a tour of two of  the Old City neighborhoods: El Born and La Barceloneta. El Born is one of Barcelona's trendiest neighborhoods boasting the Picasso museum and a Cultural Center with ruins from the 1700s, and La Barceloneta is the city’s port neighborhood, originally home to local fishermen families. You will learn about the neighborhood’s history, discover their charm, and learn the differences and similarities they share.
  • Dance Class: Are you ready for some dancing? Students will learn how to handclap a Rumba song and tap their heels for a Sevillana. This class will be taught by a professional dance teacher and students will enjoy time to learn and practice the techniques of a variety of Spanish dances.

In addition, students receive a weekly Cultural Agenda highlighting upcoming local events, networking opportunities, and cultural activities. Barcelona SAE also facilitates two day trips and one weekend excursion, chaperoned by Barcelona SAE staff, during the semester.
